• Tama officials attempting to pass ILLEGAL gun ban

    Tama

The Tama City Council is in the process of trying to ban weapons of any kind on city property. On October 24 the council voted 4-0 to approve a ban on all weapons on city property, including concealed weapons carried by properly permitted citizens. In short they want to keep you from carrying on all city property. This includes city parks.

Tama City Council members Steve Baier, Doug Ray, Mike Carnahan, and Kenny McAdoo all voted in favor of the ban. Crystal Kaufman did not cast a vote because she was not present when the proposed ban was brought up for its first vote. The proposed ban will be voted on again on November 3rd. Please feel free to contact Tama’s elected officials and tell them IFC has gotten wind of their proposed ban, and remind them that it is both illegal, and illogical.

The Iowa Firearms Coalition reminds the Tama City Council that bans like this are actually illegal in Iowa. Reference: Iowa Code 724.28

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the kind of behavior in Tama, or other parts of the state as well. According the Tama News-Herald:

“Mayor Dan Zimmerman said the city council, in 2011, had considered much of what was adopted Monday night, but had not acted upon it then.”

The Iowa firearms Coalition fought of many, many attempts to ban weapons on city property by anti-gun city councils around the state in the days after our Shall Issue was signed into law. Fortunately for Iowa’s permit to carry owners, this kind of behavior is specifically prohibited under Iowa.

Even if it wasn’t illegal, you’d hope that elected officials would be smart enough to know that creating so-called “gun free zones” will not stop anyone who is intent on doing harm. It’s a sad story, but we’ve seen it time and time again. A sticker on a door, or an ordinance on the city books means nothing to lawbreakers and will do nothing to keep these types of people from hurting others. We’d hope that Tama’s elected officials would remember what happened earlier this year in Maquoketa when a mad-man with a gun completely bypassed the “Gun Free Zone” stickers on the Jackson County Courthouse and attempted to murder the county assessor.

The fact is proposed weapons bans such this one are illegal in Iowa. And even if they weren’t they do nothing to physically stop an individual from harming people on city property. If there is anything bans such as this do, it’s disarm citizens and take away their right and ability to protect themselves.

Please contact Tama’s elected officials and tell them IFC has gotten wind of their proposed ban, and remind them that it is both illegal, and illogical.
