• Sgt. Tony Beminio: Police Officer. Father. IFC Member.

    November 21, 2016

    Sgt. Anthony Beminio IFC

Today, November 21st, would have been Sgt. Anthony “Tony” Beminio’s 39th birthday. Beminio was ambushed and murdered the morning of November 2nd, 2016. Investigators believe he was murdered by Scott Michael Greene of Urbandale. Greene is also charged in the murder of Justin Martin, an Urbandale police officer.

Beminio was a veteran police officer, SWAT team member and respected member of the Des Moines community. Beminio was also a Second Amendment advocate and part of the IFC family. He believed strongly in the people’s right to keep and bear arms. He stood alongside the thousands of IFC members using our email Advocacy Campaigns as we pushed for legalizing suppressors, and making Permit to Carry information private in Iowa.

The news of Sgt. Beminio and Officer Martin’s murders hit most everyone in the State of Iowa very hard. We all received a jarring reminder that evil is everywhere and ready to strike when we least expect it. Once we realized Tony was one of the victims, one of our own, the entire IFC leadership team immediately set to work doing what we could to make sure his family and the Martin family knew we had their backs. Tony was one of thousands of Iowa law enforcement officials who recognized and valued the Second Amendment and supported our cause. We’re eternally grateful to be able to call Tony part of the IFC family.

For the past several weeks we’ve been using our industry contacts to assemble a fundraiser for the Beminio and Martin families. We’re shoring up some of the final details, but we’re proud to say that some of the biggest names in the firearms industry have stepped up to help us. We’ll be releasing the details shortly.

In the meantime, Tony, happy birthday brother. From the bottom of our hearts thank you for your years of dedication. To your family. To your community. To IFC and our efforts protect the freedoms of all Iowans. We know you had our backs every single day, and now it’s our turn to help watch over your loved ones. You’re absolutely not forgotten, rest in peace good friend.

  • Random Stabbing Attacks Reported in Cedar Falls, IA

Two people in Cedar Falls are in the hospital after being randomly stabbed while in the University Avenue Studios apartments.

Police were dispatched to the apartment complex at 4:35 p.m. on Monday, October 17th. Once on the scene they found two victims, in separate units, each with multiple stab wounds. Officers believe the victims were chosen at random.

adam-jacobsenA 47-year-old female victim was taken to the hospital with multiple serious injuries.

A 62-year-old male victim was taken to the hospital with multiple potentially life threatening injuries.

    Both victims are recovering.

Meanwhile, police continue to investigate the apparent random stabbings. Right now 28-year-old Adam Jacobsen has been taken into custody. Jacobsen appears to also live in the University Avenue Studios apartment complex.

adam-jacobsen-fbConcerns have been raised after citizens reported alarming posts on Jacobsen’s Facebook page. Posts from earlier this year have the 28-year-old claiming to be “…craving murder.” In another post Jacobsen claimed “Ive killed people in real and never have or will get caught.” Investigators with the Cedar Falls Police Department say they are aware of these posts and they are part of their ongoing investigation.

This incident proves once again that violent human beings often defy logic and sometimes you’re just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Being able to defend yourself and your loved ones is each resident’s responsibility. The police cannot be everywhere at once and when trouble comes calling you need to be prepared and able to defend yourself and your loved ones.

The Iowa Firearms Coalition will continue to monitor this story and share more details as they develop.

  • Herd Immunity Applies to Guns as Well as Vaccinations

    February 4, 2015

    Vaccination

By Paul Hsieh – PJ Media

The recent measles outbreaks have sparked a national debate over vaccinations and the concept of “herd immunity.” The basic idea behind herd immunity is that “the vaccination of a significant portion of a population provides a measure of protection for individuals who have not developed immunity.”

The concept of “herd immunity” applies to gun ownership and crime rates just as it does to vaccinations and infectious disease.

Crime rates in Chicago dropped dramatically in 2014 after the state of Illinois allowed legal concealed carry. From the Washington Times:

[T]he number of robberies that have led to arrests in Chicago has declined 20 percent from last year, according to police department statistics. Reports of burglary and motor vehicle theft are down 20 percent and 26 percent, respectively. In the first quarter, the city’s homicide rate was at a 56-year low.

As Richard Pearson of the Illinois State Rifle Association observed:

It isn’t any coincidence crime rates started to go down when concealed carry was permitted. Just the idea that the criminals don’t know who’s armed and who isn’t has a deterrence effect. … The police department hasn’t changed a single tactic — they haven’t announced a shift in policy or of course — and yet you have these incredible numbers.

Richard Pearson estimated that 100,000 Illinois residents will have applied for concealed weapons permits in 2014 (out of a total population of 12 million). This works out to approximately 0.8% of the population.

In other words, “the 1%” of concealed weapons permit holders in Illinois have created a measurable benefit for “the 99%.” Not a bad payoff!

The Crime Prevention Research Center claims similar results nationally:

In 10 states, more than 8 percent of adults hold concealed carry permits, and all are among the states with the lowest crime rates. Lott claims his group’s analysis shows that each one percentage point increase in the adult population holding permits brings a 1.4 percent drop in the murder rate.

The medical theory of “herd immunity” posits that enough vaccinated individuals in a population can reduce the risk of contracting a disease — even for those who aren’t vaccinated. From the experience in Illinois and around the country, a relatively small number of armed people can similarly reduce the risk of crime — even for those who aren’t armed.

So if you don’t own a gun but you are enjoying safer nights out on the town or sleeping more easily in your bed at night, give a little thanks to your neighbors who are gun owners. You’re the beneficiary of gun “herd immunity.”

  • FBI Data Confirms: More Guns DO NOT Mean More Crime

    November 12, 2014

    FBI Data

Dr. John R. Lott, Jr., and the folks at the Crime Prevention Research Center just released their latest findings that indicate an important trend. Murder rates in the United States have been falling steadily for the last several years, based on the latest numbers from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report. Meantime, the number of Americans with Concealed Carry Permits, and gun purchases have risen very dramatically over the same period of time.

Keep in mind it’s impossible to say that increased gun sales and concealed carry permits is the exact cause of this drop in crime. But we can say without a doubt that more guns being sold, and more Americans carrying concealed DOES NOT LEAD TO MORE MURDERS.

Remember this the next time you see the “gunsense crowd” droning on about blood in the streets and how critical things are the United States. Tell them they’re much safer in the US than they were 20 years ago.

    The facts are:

    • Gun sales have been on the rise for years
    • Concealed Carry Permit holders are dramatically increasing in number
    • The number of murders have fallen dramatically (down approximately 40% since 1994)
    • The violent crime rate has been cut in half (down 49% since 1994)

  • “Gun Free Zone” sticker FAILS to stop attempted bloodbath in Maquoketa

    September 9, 2014

Deb Lane must certainly be counting her blessings tonight. The Jackson County Assessor was very nearly murdered today by a lunatic who walked right past a little white sticker declaring the county courthouse a “Gun Free Zone.” Tonight Deb Lane is alive not because Jackson County declared their courthouse a so-called “Gun Free Zone,” but rather because of the heroic actions of Larry “Buck” Koos. The Telegraph Herald describes today’s shooting:

Authorities said [Francis “Gus”] Glaser, who was at the meeting to argue a long-running property tax dispute, pulled a small handgun from his briefcase, pointed it at Jackson County Assessor Deb Lane and fired one shot as she was walking out of the room. Lane was not hit.
Glaser was tackled by county Supervisor Larry “Buck” Koos and held down by Koos and others. A second shot was fired during the struggle, killing Glaser.
Maquoketa Police Chief Brad Koranda said Glaser still was holding the gun with his finger on the trigger, indicating he shot himself. It’s unclear if it was intentional.

Fortunately the shooter (who was not a concealed weapon permit holder) missed his target. Unfortunately we’re once again left with more evidence that “Gun Free Zones” do nothing to make our society safer. Sandy Hook Elementary, Aurora’s Century Movie Theater, the Virginia Tech campus, and so on and so on. Case after case that a simple sign on a door does absolutely nothing to increase security. These feel good measures are nothing more than a distraction (if they’re even noticed) to lunatics who are dead set on hurting innocent people inside these “Gun Free Zones.” In this case the crazed shooter, intent on doing harm to others, not only carried a gun right past that “Gun Free Zone” sticker on the door, he even bypassed the courthouse’s seldom used metal detecting wands.

It’s a shame that we have to witness this type of incident. It’s a shame Jackson County doesn’t realize their sticker does nothing to protect those inside their courthouse. And it’s a shame that anti-gun zealots will continue to hide the truth, that so-called “Gun Free Zones” are all too often “Mass Shooting Zones” just waiting to happen. Thankfully today one of the good guys, Buck Koos, was able to thwart a potential bloodbath, and Deb Lane is still alive — no thanks to a little white sticker on a door.
