• Zaun Responds to Misleading Iowa Gun Owner Attack

    February 19, 2017

The image above was posted on the Iowa Gun Owners Facebook page on 2/19/17. This deliberately misleading information urged their members to contact Zaun under knowingly false pretenses.

    Deliberately Misleading

Senator Brad Zaun is responding to false allegations that he has pulled his support for Stand Your Ground legislation in Iowa.

Sunday, February 19th, the Iowa Gun Owners (IGO) Facebook page posted a picture of Senator Zaun with a caption falsely claiming that he had “withdrawn his support for Stand Your Ground law!” The post included Zaun’s home and cell-phone numbers and encouraged their members to call him. The problem is this Iowa Gun Owner call to action was deliberately misleading as many of their members soon found out from Senator Zaun himself.

Zaun has been a supporter of Stand Your Ground for years. Despite IGO’s claims he has not pulled his support for Stand Your Ground law, and Senator Zaun continues to be a very outspoken advocate for pro-gun legislation in Iowa (he’s even been known to carry in capitol, much to anti-gunner’s chagrin).

    Zaun’s Response

Iowa Senator Brad Zaun’s Response to Iowa Gun Owners Deliberately False Attack on Him.

Senator Zaun has been issuing the following response to anyone that emails him about his so-called lack of support for Stand Your Ground. He’s also asked us to help him set the record straight and share his comments about this matter:

“It is correct that I scratched my name off Sen. Bertrand’s/Aaron Dorr Stand Your Ground bill. Several weeks ago, I mentioned to Sen. Bertrand to not harass members of our new Republican caucus and that Stand Your Ground language will be included in one big pro second amendment omnibus bill. Recently, it was brought to my attention that IGO was dropping robo calls in some Senate Republican districts and delivering about 4” of petitions from IGO that only included the first name and last name initial. It was at that time I scratched my name off of Sen. Bertrand’s bill.

With that said, I have not changed or weakened my position on our second amendment rights including Stand Your Ground. I will be advancing the omnibus bill which will include Stand Your Ground language.

To be clear Aaron Dorr has no political capital with me and never will, as in the past he has compared me with Nancy Pelosi, once again using this as a fundraising effort. Have you ever seen an email alert from him that is not asking for your money?

I personally know many members of the Iowa Gunowners Association and have much respect for, my problem is not with you, but just that you are being used to pay for Aaron Dorr’s salary.

What’s Going On & Why Is IGO Lying?

There are several so-called Stand Your Ground bills that have been introduced this legislative session. These bills would remove Iowa’s current “duty to retreat” law that requires law-abiding run from a self-defense situation. Currently there are at least three Stand Your Ground Bills in the Iowa Senate:

    Senate File 25 | Senate File 70Senate File 262

Zaun has previously indicated his support for all of three of the bills. He had been a co-sponsor of SF262 (the bill favored by IGO), but pulled his support for that bill after IGO had allegedly started to badger some of Zaun’s fellow Republicans about this matter.

It’s important to note that SF262, which was introduced on February 25th by Senator Rick Bertrand, an IGO ally, is an almost word-for-word copy of SF25 which was introduced on January 11th, the very first day of the 2017 legislative session.

To recap, Stand Your Ground was introduced on the very first day the session as SF25. An almost exact copy of that bill is introduced over a month later in the form of SF262. The original version is still viable and in perfectly good standing, meaning there’s no need to introduce a duplicate version of a perfectly good and viable bill. IGO then starts to trying to drum up co-sponsors for their duplicate Stand Your Ground Bill (SF262) by threatening Senator Zaun’s fellow Republicans. What happens next? Senator Zaun, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, withdraws his co-sponsorship of SF262 (talk about your plans back-firing…).

All of this leads to IGO releasing false information about Zaun’s lack of support for Stand Your Ground and deliberately misleading IGO members into harassing a staunch supporter of gun owner rights. What does an organization gain from lying its own members? Who knows?

Now, it all might have worked except that Senator Zaun has been setting the record straight with everyone that calls him up, and now IGO members have been getting a dose of reality about Senator Zaun, Stand Your Ground and the code of ethics the Iowa Gun Owners operates under.

Make no mistake Iowans, Stand Your Ground is still very much alive. Senator Brad Zaun continues to support Stand Your Ground (just no longer the IGO backed SF262 version). And IGO has been caught spreading false information to the very people who support them.

    It Makes No Sense

When you consider all of the facts this whole ordeal makes very little sense. Senator Zaun has a reputation in the capitol as an extremely staunch and outspoken supporter of pro-Second Amendment legislation (including Stand Your Ground). Gun owners who are truly in the know have known this about Zaun for years.

Zaun is also the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. This is a critical fact that cannot be overlooked. Almost every single pro-gun bill in the Senate gets assigned to the Judiciary Committee. As chairman of the Judiciary Committee Zaun has the power to decide which bills get scheduled for votes and which bills get “filed away” never to see the light of day again. Ask yourself this, if you were running a group of Iowa gun owners and pushing a Stand Your Ground bill (like, for instance, SF262), do you think it would be a good idea to alienate and attack a key legislator who can single-handedly kill your bill? Do you think that would increase or decrease your odds of success?

And if you were truly supportive of passing Stand Your Ground legislation in Iowa wouldn’t you support any bill that could effectively accomplish this goal? Not just a duplicate bill that you copied and pasted from someone else and now call your own? And if you were truly supportive of Stand Your Ground wouldn’t you be honest with your members and explain that even though a key senator pulled his or her support for “your” bill there are other Stand Your Ground bills that allow you to accomplish your goal?

    Don’t Believe Us?

Numerous followers of the Iowa Gun Owners Facebook page have started to get wise the IGO lies.

We’re fully aware that there are some Iowans who like IGO and will refuse to believe any of this. That’s fine, but if you’re one of them we challenge you to start asking questions like the ones above. Post a link to this on the IGO Facebook page. Or better yet, post Senator Zaun’s response to the IGO attack and see what happens. When your comments get deleted, post it again (if you haven’t been banned). Then ask yourself if a group that misleads it’s members and then deletes anyone who questions them is really working in your best interest. Start Googling and asking around in forums and other Facebook gun groups that aren’t associated with IGO. There are gun owners all over Iowa who’ve come to the realization that this group is surrounded by controversy, bribery and sketchy behavior (just ask imprisoned and former Iowa Senator Kent Sorenson).

Finally, we know there’s a good chance IGO will lash out at us for supporting Senator Zaun. Let them. It won’t do anything to stop us from accomplishing our goals or even slow us down. We know the truth of the matter and so do our members. We also know the Iowa Firearms Coalition is the only truly effective Second Amendment group in Iowa. The only group to get pro-gun laws passed in this state. The only group that lawmakers will work with. And mark our words: We’ll be the ones standing by the governor’s side when Stand Your Ground is signed into law. The beauty of all this is you don’t have to take our word for it. Ask around. Google us. We’re confident you’ll be encouraged by what you see.

It’s a shame that good, truly pro-Second Amendment lawmakers get drug through the mud by supposed gun rights “advocates,” but that’s the reality we face here in Iowa. For those of you who know the Truth About IGO, kudos and thank you for your support. For those of you who are just learning the truth: welcome, you are most certainly not alone.

  • Review & Preview – Week 10 of Iowa’s Legislative Session

    March 22, 2015

The contest for ages has been to rescue liberty from the grasp of executive power.

    -Daniel Webster

The Clock is Ticking for SF425
Key Iowa Senators have lost sight what Omnibus Gun Bill accomplishes
Email your Senator – “Who Do You Trust More: Iowans or Out-of-State Lobbyists?”

    Week 10 recap:

Week 10 saw little action in the Iowa Senate on SF425. While the powers that be continue to avoid this bill and hide their heads in the sand, the battle rages on outside the Senate chambers. As we explained last week a slew of out-of-state lobbyists and gun control groups have flocked to Iowa in an all out last-ditch effort to stop the Omnibus Gun Bill. What started out as a grassroots push to protect and enhance the Second Amendment rights of Iowans has suddenly morphed into a battle royale that pits Iowans against numerous billionaire funded national gun control groups.

Unfortunately in the last week a few key Senators have forgotten who they’re in Des Moines to represent. With just a few whispers in their ear they’ve lost sight of the facts. The Omnibus Gun Bill has already passed 5 landslide votes in the legislature. It’s backed by Iowa law enforcement. It protects the private information of hundreds of thousands of Iowans. It allows Iowans to legally teach their children proper gun safety. And most importantly this bill is backed by an overwhelming number of everyday Iowans.

What you need to know for week 11:

This is crunch time. The second funnel date is April 3rd. For those that don’t remember, the funnel is a legislative deadline. In this case, a bill has to be approved by both chambers by April 3rd or it is considered dead for the year. We’ve already passed the House of Representatives by a huge margin. Now we just need the Senate to do its job, then this bill is off to the Governor’s desk.

With two weeks to go, there’s literally no time to waste. We’re clicking on all cylinders, and we cannot let off the gas now.

Our volunteers will be in the capitol everyday working to push this bill forward. Their efforts can only take this so far though. We need a strong showing from you if we’re going to be able to get this to a vote.

Keep calling. Keep emailing. Keep spreading the word about SF425 – It’s time for a vote!!!

The future of the Omnibus Gun Bill, and the next two weeks can be summed up like this:Grassroots Iowa firearms owners vs. big money out-of-state gun control groups. We need you to remain active, and bring as many of your family and friends into this as possible.

What you can do right now:

Call the Senate switchboard, leave a message for your Senator. Tell them you want to see SF425 brought to a vote in its original form!

The number is 515-281-3371. You can only leave messages while the Senate is active. It’ll be Monday afternoon before they start work again and you can leave a message. Please make every effort to make a call. Politely ask the switchboard operator for the Senator you wish to talk to and they’ll connect you. We’ve created a few talking points if you’re not sure what to say.

In the mean time, you can use our Legislative Action Center to send another email to remind the Senate they’re there to represent Iowans.

Of course we’ll be emailing you if there’s any critical updates on SF425. If you’re looking for more information we’re posting regular updates on our Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as our website IowaFC.org throughout the week.

Finally, the Iowa Firearms Coalition’s leadership would like to sincerely thank you for all the work you guys do. It’s truly amazing seeing so many people rally to our cause. It’s impossible to know the outcome of all this, but know that we’re genuinely thankful for your support. Most politicians would rather avoid Second Amendment issues, but around the capitol IFC members have a reputation as a class act, and that makes a real difference when it comes to advancing our cause.

We’re going toe-to-toe with some formidable adversaries. There’s still a lot of fighting to be done, and your continued support really is making a world of difference.

  • Facts for the Senate on SF425

    March 20, 2015
Iowa Police or Mom Demand Action. Who would you think knows more about fighting crime?

When you are in danger who would you rather call? The police -OR- a mom that demands action?

Call the Senate switchboard, leave a message for your Senator. Tell them you want to see SF425 brought to a vote in its original form! The number is 515-281-3371.

What the anti-gunners are not telling you

    1) This bill actually increases penalties for straw purchasers and anyone that presents false information when trying to buy a gun in Iowa. Makes it a class D felony.

    2) Gives parents, instructors, and coaches the ability to teach minors proper gun safety at a young age.
-You are currently breaking the law if you take anyone under the age of 14 shooting with a handgun.
-Education is the key. You can’t legislate gun safety. It must be taught, and the younger we teach our kids the better.
-You shouldn’t be committing a criminal act while teaching your kids proper gun safety.

    3) SF425 makes shooting and hunting safer in Iowa by legalizing suppressors (reduces the threat of irreparable hearing damage).
-They are NOT silencers, despite what Hollywood would have you believe
-Legal in 39 other states already, and regulated by the Federal gov’t/ATF
-No recorded evidence of a suppressor being used in a crime anywhere in the US.

    4) Protects the private information of gun owners and permit to carry holders.
-Makes it illegal to share the private information of permit holders.
-This has happened before in Iowa and elsewhere. CityView newspaper (in Des Moines) has published the names of 5,000+ permit holders. Paper in New York published the names and addresses of permit holders — WITH AN INTERACTIVE MAP to their homes.
-This irresponsible behavior gives criminals a treasure map to guns. And on the flip side shows everyone who’s not armed and indefensible.

Will you stand alongside Iowa’s firearms owners and law enforcement and vote yes on SF425 in its current form?

Addressing the misinformation spread by anti-gunners

SF425 is a culmination of several groups coming together.

    -Iowa Police Chiefs Association
-Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies Association
    -Iowa Peace Officers Association
    -Iowa Firearms Coalition
    -Several Iowa legislators
    -and more

    Dear Mr./Mrs. Senator

Who do you trust more: Iowa law enforcement & hundreds of thousands of lawful Iowans -OR- out-of-state lobbyists?

Ask yourself, why would Iowa police have anything to do with a bill that would make Iowan’s less safe?

Who do your constituents expect you to trust?

Despite what the anti-gunners say about background checks, Iowa will remain in compliance with federal gun laws.

It’s illegal for anyone to sell or transfer a firearm to a prohibited person (felons/domestic abusers/etc.) – this will not change under SF425.

  • Week 8 in the Iowa Legislature – Keep the Omnibus Bill in its Original Form

    March 8, 2015

“God grants liberty only to those who love it, and are always ready to guard and defend it.”

    – Daniel Webster

    Phase 1 Complete:
Omnibus Gun Bill Passes the First Funnel
    New Threats Emerging

Take action now – Use our newest Advocacy Campaign to contact the legislature.

    Week 8 recap:

The last time we emailed you we were just announcing the “Omnibus Gun Bills,” also known as HSB201 and SSB1251. In the last week we’ve seen the Omnibus Gun Bills:

    • Introduced in both the House and Senate.
    • Receive unanimous, bi-partisan passage in judiciary subcommittees in both the House and Senate.
    • Come under a heavy assault from the media and gun control zealots.
    • Pass the House Judiciary Committee by a 19-2 vote (with Republicans & Democrats voting yes).
    • Pass the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 10-3 vote (with Republicans & Democrats voting yes).

We’ve passed our first major milestone, and it truly would not have been possible without your support. This week you responded more than once with little or no advance notice. We’ve created a day-by-day recap of how the Omnibus Gun Bills survived their first major challenges of the legislative session. It’s because of your support that the Omnibus Gun Bills have been able to make it this far. We are truly humbled and grateful to have your support.

What you need to know for week 9:

The Omnibus Gun Bills now enter a new and much more dangerous stage of the legislative session. This may very well be the most critical point of the 2015 legislative session.

You should know that we’re not the only organization backing these bills. The NRA, the American Suppressor association, and several law enforcement groups are all pushing to get these bills signed into law as well. The Omnibus Gun Bills have been carefully crafted to include everything we can possibly get signed into law. They’re not perfect, there are a lot of other things we’d love to include. But the reality of the situation is the legislature is not ready to pass everything we want.

These bills include everything that’s capable of being passed right now. We cannot let perfection get in the way of doing what’s possible right now.

There’s a slight difference between HSB201 and SSB1251. The content of the bills are the exact same, but the wording is slightly different. It will take an amendment to make the wording of these bills exactly the same. We know that anti-gunners of all forms are also trying to get this bill amended and make it un-passable.

Let us be absolutely clear: Any attempt to alter, or even add to the content of Omnibus Gun Bills will KILL THESE BILLS.

Because there are so many groups involved with these bills, if the content changes in any manner other than syncing up the language, key groups will pull their support. Should that happen these bills are dead on arrival.

Gun owner privacy protection – updates to concealed carry – repealing the ban on supervised youth handgun shooting – legalizing suppressors – it all disappears in the blink of an eye if the content of these bills get changed.

We’ve worked behind the scenes for months crafting these bills. If we continue to see the level of support we’ve seen in the last week, they stand a very good chance of being passed. This is why we cannot allow them to be altered.

We’ve drafted a new “Pass the Omnibus Gun Bills WITHOUT ALTERATION” Advocacy Campaign to tell the legislature to pass these bills as is. This may be the most critical point of the 2015 legislative session. We cannot allow anti-gunners or anyone else to monkey around with these bills.

Please do everything you can to help us protect these bills. Let’s stay the course, and see this through.

What you can do right now:

Tell your legislators to keep the Omnibus Gun Bills in their original form. Changes to these bills are UNACCEPTABLE.
