This should come as no surprise, but an Iowa legislator is already to trying to capitalize on the dead and wounded from the tragedy in Oregon. Des Moines Democrat Bruce Hunter announced Monday that he plans to introduce more gun control legislation once the 2016 legislative session begins in Iowa.
Hunter told WHO-TV that he wants to pass a gun confiscation law, as well as universal background checks in Iowa.
Unfortunately the fact that Representative Hunter seems to have missed is that Oregon’s universal background check system failed to stop that murderous rampage at Umpqua Community College. Nor would they have stopped the on-air murders of Alison Parker and Adam Ward in Roanoke, Virginia. Or the Charleston, South Carolina church shooting, and so on and so on. Time and time again we see these tragically unfortunate incidents and time and time again we learn after the fact that universal background checks would not have stopped the killing. Despite all that gun control zealots like Representative Bruce Hunter refuse to acknowledge that their grand scheme is a non-starter.
The push for gun control in Iowa is nothing new for Hunter. Last year he introduced a trio of bills that would have banned the sale, trade, or transfer of all semi-automatic firearms. He also peddled a bill that would limit magazine capacity to just 10 rounds. And of course he tried unsuccessfully to institute universal background checks. Fortunately the Iowa Firearms Coalition and our allies were able to stop these bills in their tracks.
Hunter’s latest gun control push comes as no surprise. He’s been pushing gun control bills for years and has the language all queued up and ready to be introduced as soon as the legislative session begins. What’s disturbing however is the fact that Representative Hunter has no problem trotting out his plans in the aftermath of a horrible tragedy, yet months before the legislative session begins. It’s no coincidence that Hunter is rolling out this gun control package in the days that follow an unfortunate loss of life. In the words of the rabid gun control advocate Rham Emanuel, “Never let a serious crisis go to waste.” Sadly, Representative Bruce Hunter has taken that message to heart and is using innocent lives to advance his personal agenda.
If there is a silver lining to Hunter’s announcement today it’s that he “says he does not immediately plan to propose a gun registry in the state, or outlaw large capacity magazines or so-called ‘Assault weapons.'”
Why thank you Bruce! You’re only going to infringe on our rights a little at a time, how very generous of you! We also appreciate you broadcasting your true intentions rather than hiding real goals like so many of your fellow gun control advocates like to do.
The Iowa Firearms Coalition will be in the capitol building on day one of the 2016 legislative session, and every day there after. We’ll be taking Representative Hunter and his gun confiscation plans head on. If you’re like us and want to see our Second Amendment rights protected and enhanced we invite you to join the IFC. It’s the best way to send a strong message to gun control zealots that their infringements won’t fly here in Iowa.
Iowa Firearms Coalition is an entirely volunteer, grassroots, Second Amendment advocacy group. Responsible for bringing uniformity to Iowa’s Concealed Weapons Permitting process, IFC’s members work to protect and enhance Second Amendment rights in Iowa. An affiliate of the National Rifle Association, the IFC actively seeks to foster and promote the shooting sports. Sign up for our email list for the latest on Second Amendment issues in Iowa. SMB1128 12) If the Gun Ban Lobby wanted to save lives a good law would be to require guns be locked up when not in use. (In use includes being kept at hand for defense against home invasion.) That would protect children and mentally unstable, it would reduce number of stolen guns available to criminals. NRA encourages it as part of gun safety. But obviously the Gun Ban Lobby doesn’t care about saving lives. Obviously it is their hatred of stereotypical NRA men and women.
SMB1128 11) Despite Obama’s claims mass shootings do occur in other modern countries. For example recent terror attacks in France, political mass shooting in Norway, routine mass shootings in Mexico…. Of course there are also bombings that kill more and are even more common than shootings.
SMB1128 1) About half of all gun deaths are suicides. Eliminating them cuts gun violence rate in half. Confiscating guns will not stop suicides, only suicides with a gun. 2) Almost all mass shootings are drive by shootings, gang related, late night fights by crowd of people, etc. 3) What epidemic? Gun violence has been decreasing, not increasing. 4) On a per person basis the US ranks BEHIND several European countries. Countries with stricter gun laws. To compare total number of mass shootings is ignorance or deceit. More people mean more incidents even if percentages stay the same. 5) If large cities with urban violent crime are left out the US has a low gun violence rate. It is these gun ban liberal run big cities where criminals are killing each other and bystanders. 6) The argument that guns are “exported” to cities is based only on information about where a firearm was first sold. After that there is no record kept. It tells nothing about how many times it changed hands. It tells nothing about whether the guns were stolen and illegally sold to criminals. 7) FBI states that criminals get guns through theft or illegal purchases by someone else. Neither is legal and neither would be stopped by universal background check. 8) FBI states that rifles, including so-called assault weapons, are almost never used in crimes. In fact it fists, feet, clubs, pipes, hammers… all are used more often than so-called assault rifles. 9) We are not allowed to own weapons of war. We are only allowed to have castrated semi-auto copies of real assault rifles. No military uses semi-auto only rifles as assault rifles. 10) Gun bans don’t work. There are millions of Mexicans in our state so a comparison with Mexico is fair. They outlawed all but bolt action rifles and shotguns. Yet they have a much higher rate of gun violence. The guns are often automatic rifles, real assault rifles from the military. Pistols are also used despite being illegal. Their gun violence got worse, not better by banning modern firearms. Despite Fast and Furious operation they do not get their guns from the US. They can get military weapons from South America, from Mexican military, from black market gun makers.
Hallelujah for legislators like Bruce. People seem to forgot the line “well-regulated” in the second amendment. The rest of us want that to be taken seriously. This whole epidemic is out of control. More US people are being killed by guns at home than terrorism. That’s just a shame. Since you never know when the human mind is going to snap we shouldn’t be arming the population with these dangerous weapons. We need to do something about it. It would be irresponsible to sit back and do nothing.
Congress passed this:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
This is very specific regarding the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, it shall not be infringed upon. Mr. Hunter intends to stop at nothing until all guns are not only banned, but are confiscated. Hillary Clinton’s ad campaign says that the NRA won’t even negotiate. That’s like asking to negotiate the 1st amendment, and regulate freedom of speech. Let’s stop all traffic deaths by banning vehicles. Let’s stop driving under influence by banning all alcohol or drugs. Banning guns is not the answer.
Hi SMB1128
If you were a student of history, you would know that “well regulated” did NOT mean more laws or restrictions to the founders. Well regulated means well practiced. They were stating everyone who owned a firearm should constantly practice to improve and maintain their proficiency in accurately shooting their firearms. And they also believed that every able-bodied, law-abiding citizen should own firearms.
SMB1128:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The 2nd amendment is simple and straight forward and summed up in the last four words. Bruce Hunter is an example of what’s wrong with politicans in this country. He’s an anti-constituionalist and against freedom for the citizens of this nation. Where’s Bruce when it comes to securing the borders of this country? Where’s Bruce on over taxation? And where is SMB1128 with the facts? More people killed by guns than by terrorism? Tell that to the people in the Twin Towers. Tell that to the people killed at the Pentagon. Tell that to the passengers of Flight 93 who died in rural Pennsylvania. Were they more afraid of guns owned by the citizens of this nation or the terrorists? Does SMB1128 own guns? Or does SMB1128 only want to take away my rights?
You mean, as opposed to “Shall not be infringed”? It’s a compound sentence, and is a definition of militia, and then why the citizens must remain armed. Do yourself a favor, and read some of the letters and papers written by the Founders. It becomes a little more clear then. (Throw in the Declaration of Independence, too, that says it’s a duty to overthrow a tyrannical government).
