What we have been witnessing over the last week in Ukraine should be the final argument ever to be made regarding the right to keep and bear arms and the absolute necessity of it. I’m personally over hearing how I need to give up my rights due to someone’s insensitivity and ignorance. Especially from people who are so hypocritical. We know that is not the case, it sure is funny seeing them want to strip guns from us one day then arm a whole country the next.
We are seeing first hand the importance of being properly armed against tyrants. It is an absolute tragedy that is taking place currently. With it come stories of heroism from an unsuspecting underdog, Ukraine. We are hearing of the desperations of a cowardly madman blatantly lying to his people. Telling them it’s an exercise, that they are strategically targeting military, meanwhile women and children are dying. Hospitals, schools, and malls being bombed. The brave Ukrainians are knocking off entire tank columns, and squadrons of fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Bolstering their morale while crushing the Russians!
Even when outgunned and outnumbered, the fighting spirit is a force multiplier and to never be counted out. Something that was overlooked by Russia this time, as well as us during Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The fighting spirit is an unknown variable which makes strategizing difficult. Which is exactly why I laugh when I hear someone comment about not being able to fight against a certain government who has tanks, jets, and bombs. Never disregard those who have something to fight for.
Instead of confiscating firearms during a disaster *ahem* hurricane Katrina *ahem* the government of Ukraine began to arm every abled bodied person with not just guns, but machine guns, creating a well-regulated militia of private citizens. A tried-and-true method!
Soon enough everyone got involved, from the brewery making spicy cocktails to Grandma offering sunflower seeds to a lonely Russian soldier on a street corner. Everyone came together for a common goal, freedom. Now if only some of the ordnance we foolishly left behind in Afghanistan could find its way into the hands of the Ukrainians.
I understand it’s not really the “Russians” fault as much as the responsibility lies on President Putin. It’s clear from the many abandoned vehicles and equipment and the surrendering Russians troops that they too were lied to and they don’t want to be fighting against innocent people. I think one thing that is being overlooked is that the Ukrainian people aren’t a true enemy of Russia, so I could see how it would be difficult to just open fire on them. While I was serving in Afghanistan I met soldiers from many countries, aside from the language barrier, we were really all of the same mindset. We weren’t there to hurt innocent people.
What will come of these freedom fighters, we may not know for a while. What will happen to their newfound machine guns should they repel the invasion, I’m curious to find out. Will they turn them back in, will they be allowed to keep them once registered, or will they secretly store them out of non-compliance like a real patriot! This is history in the making, as well as history repeating. I truly hope the issue is resolved as quickly as possible but Putin has played the card of coward and I fear it’s only just beginning.
IFC WELCOMES NEWS OF DES MOINES COUNTY’S “SECOND AMENDMENT SANCTUARY” STATUS
The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution, unanimously, to make their community Iowa’s 35th Second Amendment Sanctuary County on Tuesday, which is also National Second Amendment Day.
“We are pleased to see yet another county, with one of Iowa’s largest urban areas, become a Second Amendment Sanctuary and we would like to thank Des Moines County’s Supervisors for taking this step today,” said Dave Funk, IFC President. “As more counties continue to pass Second Amendment Sanctuary resolutions, we are confident a message is being sent to our legislators in Des Moines and Washington that Iowans will not stand for violations against our civil rights.”
Second Amendment Sanctuary resolutions at the county level do not supersede federal law but they do prevent local resources from being used to assist the federal government in efforts that violate the Second Amendment.
The IFC has been working with state and local elected officials to protect the right of Iowans to keep and bear arms in the wake of threats by some in Washington, D.C. to support actions which would infringe upon the Second Amendment.
On Thursday (2/24), from 2-4:30PM, hundreds of Iowans from all over the state will gather at the Iowa Capitol Building for Iowa’s own “Second Amendment Day” to show their support for the right to keep and bear arms, which includes making all of Iowa a Second Amendment Sanctuary State. Today is also Brownells first annual National 2nd Amendment Day.
Iowa’s Second Amendment Sanctuary Counties, so far, also include: Mitchell, Chickasaw, Pocahontas, Hardin, Carroll, Jasper, Cedar, Washington, Madison, Mills, Adams, Clarke, Humboldt, Kossuth, Ringgold, Buchanan, Van Buren, Winnebago, Decatur, Dallas, Guthrie, Benton, Page, Lucas, Taylor, Union, Hancock, Buena Vista, Pottawattamie, Cherokee, Montgomery, Fremont, Muscatine and Wayne.
The Iowa Firearms Coalition, an affiliate of both the NRA and the NSSF, is a 501(c4) nonprofit and is Iowa’s only effective pro-Second Amendment rights organization.
Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence has awarded Iowa an “F” rating for our lack of support for gun control, we will take that as a badge of honor. We were previously a “C” and have been chasing the elusive “F” rating. While Giffords is not a reliable source, the link to their publishing can be found here.
Now to correct their mistakes. We did not recently allow guns at the Capitol, that happened in 2017. (There was a change to the wording this year to drop the requirement for a PCW.) Also, they state we repealed a “3 day wait on the purchase of firearms”, but that delay applied only to the transfer of pistols and revolvers and was instituted long before the establishment of the National Instant Check System. Let there be NO QUESTION of IFC’s list of legislative victories and the opposition’s defeats which you can FIND HERE.
Chris Lee of NSSF says that “Iowa saw the biggest ranking drop of any state thanks to your hard work.”
Even Giffords admits that we are ranked 38 lowest out of 50 for the rate of deaths by gun – 18% below the national average. Which is proof that the increase in responsible firearm ownership may also play a part in a decrease in crime. Compare that with the states that have the strictest gun control coincidentally have the highest crime rate.

A House Staffer was arrested in Washington, DC for carrying an unregistered weapon into Congress while also not having a license to carry it. To be honest here, I have no issue with someone carrying an unregistered firearm, or without a license to do so if they’re lawfully allowed to possess firearms. In Iowa we have the luxury of not having a firearm registry, we have Constitutional Carry, and we can legally carry into our beautiful State Capitol.
However, we’re not talking about Iowa here. We are talking about the most heavily policed state in the country and even they can’t get it right. With a place that has facial recognition, more police per capita than nearly anywhere else in the country, and more dreamt up security measures than one can imagine. I understand, DC is not perfect, clearly. In my mind I would assume of all places DC would be the radical lefts shining beacon of gun control that works, except it clearly doesn’t. We know gun control doesn’t work, that’s not the argument here.
What I am trying to understand is who this staffer is, how he “forgot” a firearm, passed through security where they clearly saw a firearm, but he was allowed to stroll freely for 4 minutes putting the entire complex on lockdown prior to being stopped. In my opinion, forgetting you have a firearm on you is a lot like leaving your kid in a car while you go into the convenience store for some fatty cakes and a soda pop. You just don’t do it. This was a complete failure on security for letting him through.
Lets take a moment and disregard the fact he forgot his firearm, I don’t know the full outcome of the situation yet. So, this man is essentially made a criminal now for exercising his right to bear arms simply because the security measures that were in place, failed due to human error. As far as I can gather, possessing a firearm or ammunition is a maximum sentence in jail and a $2500 fine. I’ve also found that this has happened many times prior.
This happening on the heels of what our talking heads call an “insurrection,” one would assume they would ramp up security measures and take it more seriously. What would happen if a non staffer, like myself would wander into our nations Capitol armed. Would we be fined, have our hand slapped and released or would we be jailed indefinitely thanks to the Patriot Act. Who knows.
In closing, take the situation for what it’s worth. Even those who legislate, can’t reduce human error, and stripping rights from law abiding persons doesn’t make anyone safer it just slowly makes everyone criminals. While they sit in their ivory tower, which continues to be breached, I will sit here comfortably and responsibly armed providing my own security.
